Dear Type 1 Diabetes Community:
It has been a very exciting time since we kicked off the T1D Think Tank Network back in May 2013. Frankly, the reaction to that inaugural event was overwhelming and unexpected. Making sense of how our uniquely creative and collaborative methods had uncovered a process that had such a positive impact on the relationship between patients and health care professionals forced us to step back for a while so as to understand it properly.
The goal of my message is to help you better understand where we have been, and more importantly where the T1D Think Tank is headed.
Over the last 18 months we have officially incorporated as a non-profit entity, and assembled an amazing board of directors and advisory council composed of leading endocrinologists, diabetes educators, allied health professionals, and patient opinion leaders. Additionally we have received generous support to pursue our mission from courageous partners who share our values and understand our vision of a new approach to managing Type 1 Diabetes. T1D Think Tank Network is truly becoming a community of professional experts, patient opinion leaders and partners, dedicated to improving the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes.
We also have been able to increase our capacity to deliver our unique style of programming. We have conducted sessions exclusively for practicing endocrinologists (June 2014), a large cohort of Endocrinology residents at the Canadian Diabetes Association Annual Meeting (October 2014), and presented to large groups of diabetes educators. These sessions have taught us how to use creative tension as a tool to pry open the doors of perception, giving healthcare professionals and patients new ways to understand each other and improve communication.
Our plans for 2015 and beyond are bold. In the coming months you’ll start seeing some of our innovative programming in cities across Canada. Expect to see us in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver collaborating with members of the Type 1 community. It’s going to be an intensive, exhausting, and exhilarating trip across the country.
Most importantly, I invite you to join us. We are committed to building relationships, sharing experiences and reflecting on the inspiration of others. We are keen to learn your stories and hear your insights.
